This workshop was conducted to make the teachers understand the classroom problems and how to deal it with simple counseling technique. Teachers have multiple roles to perform now a day. Teachers increasingly face many challenges in a wide range of areas, mainly in those related to their students’ behavioral problems and psychological well-being post corona. Teachers can help, assist or guide students at risk or with difficulties at earlier stages and then refer them to well trained counselors. These counselors have critical role to play in supporting teachers helping their difficult pupils.
The skills that the teacher should know should not be as complex as the counselor does. The basic skills in counseling such as empathy, genuineness, self-closure and few more at least put into practice by the teacher in order to know their students and create or invent interesting learning and teaching lessons.
Teachers play an important role in bridging this gap. A teacher who can be trusted and shows empathy can offer support and then guide the students to the School counselor when necessary.
The knowledge of counselling skills is essential for teachers to promote student learning and well-being. Teachers can may a key role in resolving student issue and concerns. The classroom is a place in the school where teacher spends more time and is most likely to influence students.
On final note I think one of the most important aspect of a Teacher as a counsellor is the ability to be self- aware and empathic. Self-awareness is reflecting our action and making changes to improve ourselves to become better people and better teachers. Empathy is standing in the shoes of our students and seeing our classes through their eyes.
